General Cheikh Wade strengthens ties with Birmingham – 9 to 11 August 2025

Weekend Consular Services for the Community

On Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 August, the Embassy of Senegal team delivered important consular services to the Senegalese community in Birmingham. Over two days, the team:

  • Received 26 passport applications
  • Issued 40 consular cards
  • Recorded 2 birth registrations
  • Completed 5 notary certifications

Following the administrative services, Ambassador General Cheikh Wade held an informal gathering with the community for discussions around striving for greater integration, safeguarding their children and stronger solidarity.

Courtesy Call to the Lord Mayor of Birmingham

On Monday 11 August, Ambassador Wade paid a courtesy visit to The Right Worshipful, The Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Zafar Iqbal MBE, JP (2025–2026), accompanied by Lloyd Broad, Director of European and International Affairs.

Discussions focused on the visibility and engagement of Birmingham’s Senegalese community. The Lord Mayor expressed interest in attending the Senegalese community cultural events and supported the idea of a Senegalese flag raising ceremony at Birmingham City Council on occasions such as Senegal’s Independence Day.

Business Links at the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce

That same morning, Ambassador Wade and his delegation visited the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC), where they met with Alex Cole, Chair of the Black Business Collective (BBC), Lillian Elekan, Director of Membership, David Woakes, Head of Commercial Development, and Denise Myers, a member of the BBC.

The meeting covered an introduction to the GBCC and its networks, followed by a presentation of the Black Business Collective, which focused on diaspora trade, business connectivity, and the promotion of inclusive supply chains.

The session concluded with remarks from the Ambassador, who outlined Senegal’s economic priorities and highlighted opportunities for future collaboration.
